These songs are little recorded exercises, made for the Modes Courses presented by Trey Gunn in 2022. The Modes 2 Course on exotic modes ran in the spring and Modes 1 covering the common Western modes took place in the fall. The first and last track from Modes 1 are exactly what they say. It's amazing how just a few looped notes can build to something so complex.
Track two through five are from Modes 2. While playing around with the Bartok Scale, I found a riff that sounded like a game show theme song, which became Wheel! Of! Peril! Another exotic mode yielded a Turkish spy riff, which is now track three. Track four features vocals from Logray. Logray is my cat.
Did you ever try to modulate a constantly shifting soundscape from a minor mode to a major one, then back again? Well, that is what I tried on track 5; the jury is still out if it was successful or not.
Track six is an experiment with varying a theme through shifting the root (This was a special assignment in Modes 1). The melody here is going to be the motif for the upcoming "Beyond The Veil" album, which is founded on sounds from space. This excerpt from Sol is still a work in progress, and has audio captured from the outer planets. It ends with the bow shock of Voyager 2 passing through the heliosphere, the very edge of our solar system.
